Rooted in the Bay Area’s innovation ecosystem, Bay Area Access is a California nonprofit advancing access for blind, DeafBlind, and disabled individuals through solutions designed to scale across California and beyond.

Born out of years of grassroots community advocacy, Bay Area Access represents a new path forward: community-led, accountable, and unapologetically focused on enforcing accessibility as a
structural and operational obligation. Our bylaws guarantee real representation of blind, DeafBlind, and disabled people, an empowered Community Advisory Council, and open meetings where community members can speak freely and without fear of retaliation. Bay Area Access was founded to reject the tokenism and paternalism that have long limited disabled people’s role in shaping their own futures. Around the world, efforts to advance accessibility, equity, and
autonomy as defined by disabled people themselves increasingly draw inspiration from American innovations — from civil rights legislation to digital accessibility standards.

But laws and technologies alone are not enough. True progress requires governance models that place disabled people in real positions of power.

Our governance structure ensures that blind, DeafBlind, and disabled people hold meaningful, enforceable authority over leadership, policy, and oversight. While power must rest with the community, we proudly welcome non-disabled allies who stand with us in advancing a world where accessibility, dignity, and autonomy are universal.
